Backup Power for Tennessee: Tornadoes, Ice and the TVA Grid

The early hours of 3 March 2020. A tornado tracked across Nashville and Mt. Tennessee outages come at night, in any season, from three different directions.

Why Tennessee is its own problem

Night tornadoes. Middle Tennessee is in the part of the country where tornadoes strike after dark and in winter as often as spring. A tornado does not damage the grid, it removes it, and a neighbourhood in the path rebuilds from nothing.

Ice in the west. Memphis and West Tennessee get freezing rain that coats every line and brings trees down for days. Cold, grey, and MLGW has a long history of slow restoration. verify

The TVA grid. TVA generates; local power companies distribute. In December 2022, extreme cold pushed demand past generation and TVA ordered rolling blackouts with minutes of warning. That can happen again in any severe cold snap, storm or no storm.

Gas heat is common. The good news for winter.

First: the shelter

Worth saying plainly. If you are in Middle Tennessee and do not have a safe room or a shelter plan, that is the purchase. A battery does nothing during the storm.

Backup power is for the days after, and for the ice and the blackouts. It is the second thing.

Winter: the furnace, and the rolling blackout

Power the furnace blower. A few hundred watts cycling heats the whole house on a 1,000Wh unit that also covers the fridge and internet. Needs a transfer switch and an electrician, fitted in autumn. The setup.

For a rolling blackout, the outages are short — an hour or so at a time — but they land in dangerous cold with no warning. A unit plugged in permanently at 100% carries the furnace through each rotation without anyone noticing.

After a tornado

If you are in the path, the outage is a week and the sky is clear. Panels earn their keep for the restoration, and the priority is phones, lights, the fridge and charging for the neighbours.

If you are outside the path, you may have power by dinner. A small unit covers the night.

What not to buy in Tennessee

Electric space heaters. A 1,500W heater empties a 1,000Wh unit in under an hour. Power the furnace.

A unit in the garage. It will not be there when the rolling blackout hits, and it may not charge in the cold.

The free things, which matter most

Know your local power company. NES, MLGW, KUB, EPB or a co-op — not TVA. They run the outage map and the restoration.

Sign up for the local company's alerts. The 2022 rolling blackouts were announced by text minutes ahead.

Run the drill before winter. Kill the main breaker on a Saturday and find out whether the furnace plan actually works.
