The heat after a hurricane is the real danger, not the storm. Here is what actually runs, why solar panels disappoint, and the mistake that kills people every season.

What gets you is day three. Ninety-two degrees, ninety percent humidity, no air moving, and a fridge full of food you're about to lose.

Florida outages are a heat problem wearing a wind problem's clothes.

Why Florida is its own case

Two things make it different from anywhere else in this series.

Restoration takes longer than people expect. Widespread wind damage isn't one big repair — it's thousands of small ones spread across hundreds of miles. Crews go to hospitals and dense population centers first. If you're rural, or on a barrier island, you wait.

Plan for three days as a floor, not a ceiling.

And the weather afterwards is often bad for solar. This is the part most guides get wrong.

The heat, honestly

You are not running air conditioning off a portable battery. Not a window unit overnight, and certainly not central air.

Look at the fan column against the AC column. A battery that gives you two hours of air conditioning gives you most of a day of fans.

So the plan is fans, and it's better than it sounds:

One room. Close the doors. You're cooling a bedroom, not a house.

Curtains shut on the sun side from mid-morning. Blocking the heat is free; removing it is expensive.

Two fans, not one. One pulling cooler air in after dark, one moving air across you. Air movement changes how hot you feel far more than a couple of degrees does.

A damp towel in front of a fan. Evaporation is free cooling and your battery doesn't pay for it.

What to buy

The realistic core: 2,000Wh class

The Bluetti AC200L or similar. Fridge, two fans, phones, internet, and a CPAP if someone needs one — for a couple of days without rationing hard.

At 1,000Wh you're covering the fridge and phones but making choices about the fans. In Florida heat, that's a choice you'll regret.

Panels, with realistic expectations

The mistake that kills people every season

Flood zones

If your area takes water, store the battery high.

Not on the garage floor. Not in a ground-floor closet that has flooded before. A lithium pack that has been submerged is damaged, potentially dangerous, and covered by nobody's warranty.

Same for panels — bring them inside before the wind arrives. They're expensive kites.

Gas or battery in Florida?

Plenty of Florida households end up owning both, and it's a reasonable answer.

The battery lives inside, silent, running the fridge and the fans and the CPAP. No exhaust, no fuel, works the instant the power drops.

The gas generator lives in the shed for heavier loads and for recharging the battery — when you can get fuel, which after a major landfall is a real question.

If you can only own one and your house is normal-sized: buy the battery. It works on day one when the gas stations are shut, and it can't kill you in your sleep.

Before the season, not during it

Prices in this category are meaningfully better in spring than in the week a cone points at you. So is availability.

Buy in April. Charge it. Test it with the fridge for ten minutes so you find out on a sunny Tuesday whether it trips on the compressor.

How long do Florida hurricane outages last?
