Solar Generator vs Gas Generator: The Honest Comparison

Gas wins on raw power and price. Battery wins on everything else. Here is exactly where each one falls apart, including the part that kills people.

The generator started on the fourth pull. Everyone on the street heard it, and for about ten minutes you felt like the smartest person in the neighborhood.

Then it needed gas at 2am. And the stations were closed, or out, or had lines.

That is the whole comparison in one story. Gas gives you more power than a battery ever will. It also asks you for things at the worst possible time.

Where gas genuinely wins

Let's be fair, because a lot of battery reviews aren't.

Raw output. A mid-range gas generator makes several thousand watts continuously. Your central air, your well pump, your electric range — a big gas unit does those. Batteries in the same price bracket do not.

Unlimited runtime. As long as you can buy fuel, it keeps going. A battery holds what it holds and then it is a heavy box.

Price per watt. It is not close. Gas is dramatically cheaper for the power you get.

If your problem is "I need 5,000 watts for four days and I have a limited budget," gas is the answer. Say so honestly.

Where gas falls apart

That is not a minor asterisk. That is the reason a lot of people should buy a battery even though gas is cheaper.

Fuel you cannot get. When the grid goes down over a wide area, pumps do not work. The gas you need is in the ground under a station that cannot pump it.

Maintenance you will not do. Gas generators want oil changes, fresh fuel, stabilizer, and a run every few months. Most sit for two years, get pulled out during an emergency, and refuse to start. Ask anyone who has one.

Noise. Yours will run all night. So will your neighbor's opinion of you.

It cannot come inside. Which means extension cords through a window, which means a gap in your weather sealing during exactly the storm you are sheltering from.

Where battery wins

It works indoors. Silent, no exhaust, sits next to the bed. If you use a CPAP, this is not a convenience — it is the whole point.

It works instantly. Leave a LiFePO4 unit plugged in and it takes over the moment the grid drops. Your fridge never notices. No pull cord, no fumbling with a flashlight.

It needs nothing from you. No fuel, no oil, no annual ritual. Plug it in and forget it for three years.

It is not a fire risk in your garage. Storing five gallons of gasoline is storing five gallons of gasoline.

The cost math over ten years

Gas is cheaper the day you buy it. The gap narrows after that.

Whether that closes the gap depends entirely on how often your power actually goes out. Four times a year, gas is still cheaper. Twice a decade, the battery you never maintained wins easily.

What we would not buy

Do not buy an open-frame contractor generator for home backup. They are cheap and they are unbearably loud. You will use it once, hate it, and leave it in the shed. Buy an inverter generator or don't buy gas.

Do not buy a small battery as a substitute for gas if you have electric heat or a well. A 1kWh unit is a wonderful thing and it will not solve those problems. Pretending otherwise is how people spend a thousand dollars and stay cold.

Do not buy a gas generator you will store in an attached garage with fuel in the tank. If that is your only storage, that is a real argument for a battery.

What we would actually do

Own both, if you can.

The battery lives inside, plugged in, doing the fridge and the phones and the CPAP silently. The gas generator lives in the shed for the heavy stuff and for recharging the battery when the sun doesn't show up.

If you can only own one, ask yourself one question: is your problem power, or is your problem duration?

Short outages and a normal house — buy the battery. Long outages, a well pump, or electric heat — buy the gas, and buy the CO alarm at the same time.

What's good

Is a solar generator as powerful as a gas generator?

Can I run a solar generator indoors?

Yes. That is the single biggest advantage. A battery produces no exhaust, so it can sit next to your bed. A gas generator must never be run indoors, in a garage, or near a window — carbon monoxide from generators kills people in the US every single year.

Which is cheaper?

Can I have both?

Plenty of people do, and it is arguably the best setup. Battery inside for the fridge, the CPAP and the electronics. Gas outside for the heavy loads and for recharging the battery.

How loud is a gas generator really?

Loud enough that your neighbors will know exactly whose it is. Inverter models are much quieter than open-frame ones, but nothing gas is quiet. A battery makes almost no noise beyond a fan.
