How Long Will a Freezer Stay Cold Without Power?

Why a freezer beats a fridge by so much
Two reasons, and understanding them tells you how to stretch it.
Thermal mass. Frozen food is a large block of cold. It takes an enormous amount of heat to warm it, and it gives that cold back to the air around it for a long time.
Starting temperature. A freezer sits near 0°F. It has to climb about 32 degrees before anything starts thawing. A fridge sits at 37°F and only has three degrees of margin before it's in trouble.
This is also why a full freezer lasts twice as long as a half-empty one. Air holds almost no cold. Food does.
Four free things that add hours
1. Fill the empty space — before the outage
Jugs of water, milk cartons of water, zip bags of water. Anything with mass.
Do this now, not when the forecast turns. Water takes hours to freeze, and once frozen it works for you permanently.
2. Turn it colder a day ahead
If a storm is coming, drop the freezer to its coldest setting the day before. You're banking cold into the food itself, and every degree lower is more margin later.
3. Cover it
Blankets, sleeping bags, moving blankets over the whole unit. It's a cool box — insulating it works exactly as you'd expect.
Leave the vents at the back clear if the power might come back.
4. Tape the door
Sounds silly. Works.
The problem isn't that you're forgetful — it's that reaching for the freezer is automatic. A strip of painter's tape interrupts the habit long enough for you to think.
Powering it, if you have a battery

The smart way: don't run it continuously. A freezer that's already cold only needs an hour of power every few hours to stay frozen. Cycling it stretches a battery dramatically further than leaving it plugged in.
Dry ice
Genuinely effective if you can get it.

Handling rules: gloves, never bare hands. Never in a sealed room — it releases carbon dioxide as it sublimates. Put it on a board or cardboard on top of the food rather than directly against it.
Call ahead. Supply disappears fast once a storm is forecast.
When to throw it out
The line is 40°F for two hours. Above that temperature, for longer than that, discard perishables.
Safe to refreeze: anything that still has ice crystals, or has stayed at or below 40°F. Texture may suffer. Safety won't.
Throw out: meat, poultry, fish, and anything with dairy that has fully thawed and been warm.
The short version
Full freezer, door shut: two days. Half full: one.
