Ice storms are the outage the Midwest actually plans for, and they're the ones that last.

Why ice is worse than wind

Wind knocks down what it knocks down and then it's over.

Ice keeps working. Branches keep loading, keep breaking, keep landing on lines for days as it melts and refreezes. Every one is a separate repair.

And it's cold. Which turns an inconvenience into a house you can't stay in.

The one fact worth more than everything else here

If you have gas or propane heat, you almost certainly only need to power the furnace blower.

If your heat is electric

Be straight with yourself: a portable battery is not a heating solution.

A 1,500W space heater empties a 1,000Wh pack in under an hour. There is no consumer battery at a sane price that heats a house electrically for a night.

What actually works:

One room. Close every other door. Hang a blanket over the doorway if you're serious.

Layers, sleeping bags, hats. Unglamorous and extremely effective.

Everyone in the same room at night. Bodies are 100-watt heaters that don't need charging.

Know where the warming shelter is. In a multi-day ice storm with electric heat, leaving is a legitimate plan, not a failure.

What the cold does to your battery

Two things, and only one of them is a problem.

Discharging in the cold reduces the usable capacity. You get less out of the pack than the label says. Annoying, not damaging.

Charging below freezing is what causes permanent damage to lithium cells. Most decent units refuse to charge when they're too cold — that's the battery management system protecting your investment, not a fault.

The sump pump problem

Worth flagging because it catches people at the worst moment.

When the ice finally melts, water moves. If your basement relies on a sump pump and the power is still out, you have a flooding problem stacked on top of an outage.

The catch is duty cycle. In a heavy thaw the pump runs a lot, and "a lot" is unpredictable. Size generously here.

What to buy

Gas heat plus a sump pump: step up to 2,000Wh. You want margin when the thaw comes.

Electric heat, or a well, or long rural outages: you're in 4,000Wh and 240V territory — and at that budget get a standby generator quote too. They don't run out on day four, which in an ice storm is a real consideration.

The free things, which matter most in cold

Charge everything when the forecast says freezing rain. Not when the lights flicker.

Fill the bathtub if you're on a well.

Fill the freezer with jugs of water. Mass holds cold — and in winter you have the option of putting food outside, which is the one advantage this weather gives you.

Fill the car's tank. A 12V adapter makes it a slow charger, and it's already in the driveway.

Find the flashlights before dark. Sunset comes early and there's no daylight to work by.

Can a power station run my furnace?
