Which battery actually gets your family through the night, which one is a waste of money, and how to tell the difference before you spend.

The freezer defrosted first. You do not notice it happening, because the door stays shut and everything looks fine. Then on day two you open it, and there is a smell.

That is the real cost of a long outage. Not the darkness — the darkness is almost pleasant for the first evening. It is the six hundred dollars of food, the CPAP you cannot run, and the phone at four percent when you need to call someone.

So let's work out what you actually need. Not what a spec sheet says. What gets your family to Wednesday.

Start with hours, not watts

Here is the mistake nearly everyone makes. They shop for a big number.

The number that matters is not on the front of the box. It is the answer to one question: how many hours does this keep my fridge cold?

A full-size fridge pulls around 150 watts while the compressor runs, and the compressor only runs about a third of the time. verify So the real draw over a day is much smaller than the label suggests. That is why a 1,000Wh battery — which sounds tiny — genuinely covers a fridge overnight.

Look at the fridge row. The jump from the small unit to the mid unit changes your night. The jump from the mid unit to the huge one changes your week.

Most people need the middle option. Very few need the top one.

The second number: can it start your stuff?

Capacity tells you how long. Surge tells you whether.

Motors draw a huge spike when they kick on — several times their running draw, for about a second. Your fridge compressor does it. Your well pump does it much harder. Your sump pump does it at the worst possible moment.

If a unit's surge rating is below that spike, it does not run your fridge slowly. It trips, and shuts off, and you find out at 3am.

Best for most people: EcoFlow DELTA 2

This is the one we point most people at. Not because it wins every spec — it doesn't — but because it fits the shape of a real outage.

It refills from a wall outlet in about eighty minutes. verify That sounds like a boring detail until the grid flickers back for an hour in the middle of a two-day event. Slower units barely gain anything in that window. This one nearly refills.

Six AC outlets means the fridge, the modem, a lamp and two phone chargers all plug in without a tangle of power strips on the counter.

Who should skip it: anyone whose real worry is the well pump. It will not start one, and no amount of hoping changes that.

Best build quality: Anker SOLIX C1000

Anker makes the best-assembled 1kWh box in this category. It is also the most compact, which matters more than you would think.

If it lives in an RV bay, a closet shelf or under a stair, the C1000 fits where the others need you to move something. And when something does go wrong, Anker's warranty service is the least painful of the four big brands.

Who should skip it: anyone who wants to grow the system later. Expansion tops out around 2kWh and costs enough that you would have been better buying bigger up front.

Best value: Bluetti AC180

More capacity than the famous brands for usually less money, and a strong surge rating that starts fridges without drama.

The trade is polish. Bluetti's app has historically been the weakest of the big four, and the documentation assumes you will figure things out. If you are comfortable with that, you get more battery for your money.

Who should skip it: someone buying their first power station who wants it to explain itself. Get the Jackery or the Anker instead.

If you genuinely need the whole house: EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3

This is the one that can do 240V. Well pumps, some dryers, circuits rather than extension cords.

But be honest about what you are buying. It weighs 113 pounds. verify To get real value out of it you need a transfer switch, and that means an electrician. Add that up and you are in standby generator territory — which deserves a serious look at that price.

Who should skip it: renters, and anyone who plans to move it. It has wheels for a reason.

The cheap one that is still real: EcoFlow RIVER 3

Under 250Wh. It will not save your food.

What it will do is keep phones charged, run a CPAP for a night, and power a lamp and a router. For a lot of households that is genuinely the whole problem.

Who should skip it: anyone buying for hurricane season. If your plan for a three-day outage is this box, you do not have a plan.

The one we would not buy: Goal Zero Yeti 1500X

Somebody has to say it.

Goal Zero more or less invented this category and the hardware still feels tough in a way the plastic competition doesn't. But the 1500X uses older NMC lithium-ion chemistry rated for around 500 cycles, against 3,000 or more for the LiFePO4 units above. verify

That is not a small gap. That is the difference between a battery your kids inherit and one you replace.

It also recharges from the wall in many hours rather than one, and carries a two-year warranty where the competition offers five. verify

Who is it still right for? Genuinely, two people. Someone who already owns Goal Zero panels and accessories and wants them to keep working. And someone who values a long-established US company over every spec on the sheet. If that is not you, buy something newer.

How many days should you plan for?

Most US outages are over within a day. If you are in hurricane country, ice storm country, or at the end of a long rural line, plan for three.

Three days is where the math changes. At that length you stop asking about battery size and start asking about recharging, which means solar panels or a car.

Comfort

  • Cheaper than people expect. Morale matters in a long outage.

  • The efficient way to survive a summer outage. AC is not.

  • Be honest with yourself: almost no portable battery can do this overnight.

  • If you have gas heat, powering just the blower keeps the whole house warm.

  • The surge at startup is what trips small units, not the running draw.

  • Needs a serious unit. Check the surge rating, not the running rating.

Medical

  • Turn the heated humidifier OFF and a CPAP becomes trivially cheap to run.

  • The heater roughly doubles the draw. Dry throat beats a dead battery.

  • Life-critical. Size for double what you calculate and talk to your equipment supplier.

Water & Sump

  • Runs in short bursts, but the startup surge is enormous. Many units cannot start it at all.

  • Duty cycle depends entirely on how much water is coming in. In a storm, assume worse.

Most US outages end within a day. If you're in hurricane or ice-storm country, plan for three and hope for one.

What we would actually do

If you are buying one thing and never thinking about it again, get a 1kWh LiFePO4 unit with at least 1,800W output, and leave it plugged in.

That covers the fridge, the internet, the phones and a lamp — which is 90 percent of what an outage takes from you. It costs a fraction of a whole-home system. And because it is always charged, it takes over the moment the lights go, instead of sitting in a closet at 40 percent.

Buy the small one that stays plugged in over the big one that lives in the garage. Every time.

Questions people actually ask

Will a solar generator run my whole house?

Almost certainly not, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. A typical portable unit runs your fridge, your lights, your internet and your phones. Central air, electric water heaters and electric ranges are out of reach for everything except the biggest 240V systems, and those need an electrician to install.

Do I need solar panels to use one?

No. You charge it from a wall outlet before the storm and it works fine. Panels matter when the outage runs past a day and there is no power to plug into. For a one-night outage, panels are optional.

How long do these actually last before the battery dies?

Look at the cycle rating, not the warranty. A LiFePO4 pack rated for 3000 cycles will still hold about 80 percent of its capacity after you have fully drained and refilled it 3000 times. If you use it four times a year, you will not wear it out in your lifetime.

Can I leave it plugged in all the time?

With LiFePO4 units, yes, and you should. That is how you get UPS behavior, where it takes over the instant the grid drops and your fridge never notices. Older lithium-ion chemistry does not love sitting at 100 percent for years.

Is a gas generator just better?

For pure watts per dollar, yes. But it cannot run indoors, it needs fuel you may not be able to buy, it is loud enough to annoy your whole street, and it kills people every year through carbon monoxide. We wrote a whole comparison on this.
