Surge Watts vs Running Watts: What Actually Trips Your Unit

Your battery is big enough and it still shut off. This is why, and it is the spec almost nobody checks before buying.

The battery said 78 percent. You plugged in the fridge. The screen flashed, everything went quiet, and the unit shut itself off.

Nothing is broken. You just met the spec that spoils more purchases in this category than any other.

What a surge actually is

Motors are lazy at rest. Getting one spinning takes a lot more power than keeping it spinning.

So when your fridge compressor kicks on, it pulls a spike — several times its running draw — for well under a second. Then it settles.

Your inverter has to survive that second. If it can't, it protects itself and cuts the power.

The numbers that catch people

Rough figures, and yours will differ:

  • Fridge: around 150W running, spiking near 900W. verify
  • Sump pump (1/3 HP): around 600W running, spiking near 1,800W. verify
  • Well pump (1/2 HP): around 800W running, spiking near 2,500W. verify
  • Window AC (8,000 BTU): around 750W running, spiking near 2,200W. verify

Notice the pattern. The running number always looks manageable. The spike is three times bigger.

Now look at what people buy. A unit rated 1,800W continuous with 2,700W surge handles the fridge easily and the well pump barely — and "barely" is not what you want at 3am in February.

Which things surge and which don't

These surge hard: fridges, freezers, well pumps, sump pumps, air conditioners, power tools, anything with a compressor or a motor.

These barely surge at all: LED lights, laptops, phone chargers, routers, TVs, CPAP machines.

These don't surge but are brutal anyway: space heaters, kettles, hair dryers, microwaves. Heating elements draw their full load immediately and hold it. No spike, just a wall.

That second group is why a small battery runs your whole evening of electronics without complaint. That third group is why the same battery dies in forty minutes with a space heater.

How much headroom to leave

Twenty percent above your biggest startup spike, minimum. verify

Meeting the number exactly works in a lab. In your house the motor is cold, the bearings are older than the manual assumes, and the voltage sags a little. Margin is what turns a spec sheet into a working system.

If your biggest load is a fridge spiking to 900W, almost anything in the 1kWh class covers it comfortably.

If your biggest load is a well pump spiking to 2,500W, you need a genuinely large unit — and you should know that before you shop, not after.

The fix that actually works: soft starters

For air conditioners especially, a soft start device is worth knowing about.

It ramps the compressor up instead of slamming it on, which flattens the spike. RV owners use them constantly to run rooftop air conditioners off batteries that could never handle the raw startup. verify

It's an install job, and it costs money. But it's often cheaper than buying the next size up of battery, and it solves the actual problem rather than throwing capacity at it.

What to do before you buy

Find your biggest motor. Usually the fridge, sometimes the sump pump, occasionally the well.

Look at its label. If it lists a locked rotor amps or LRA figure, multiply that by 120 — that's your real surge in watts, and it's often higher than the internet estimates.

Then buy a unit whose surge rating clears that by a comfortable margin.

Do that one check and you avoid the most common, most frustrating failure in this whole category. Capacity gets all the attention. Surge is what actually decides if the thing works.

Questions people actually ask

What are surge watts?

The brief spike of power an appliance demands the instant it switches on, usually lasting under a second. Anything with a motor or a compressor does it, and the spike can be several times the running draw.

Why did my power station shut off with plenty of battery left?

Almost always the surge. Your appliance asked for more power in that first second than the inverter could supply, so the unit protected itself and cut out. Battery level had nothing to do with it.

How much surge headroom do I need?

Aim for a surge rating at least 20 percent above your biggest appliance's startup draw. Meeting it exactly works on paper and fails on a cold morning when the motor is stiff.

Do LED lights and laptops have a surge?

Essentially no. Anything without a motor or a heating element starts smoothly. Surge is a motor problem, which is why fridges, pumps and air conditioners cause all the trouble.

Can a soft starter help?

Yes, particularly for air conditioners. A soft start device smooths the startup spike so a smaller unit can handle it. It is a genuine fix, not a gimmick, and it is common in RV setups.
